PhD Representation Mathematics and Physics

Introduction of the representatives of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Freiburg

According to the Academic Law of Baden-Württemberg (§ 38 (7) LHG), all PhD students at the universities of Baden-Württemberg have the opportunity to establish a convention of PhD Candidates, in order to elect PhD representatives that pursue the interests of the PhD students. The convention of PhD students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Freiburg met in July 2019 and elected two PhD representatives for the convention.

Next to convention the PhD students have two seats in the faculty council. Due to lack in the law the two PhD students have to be matriculated. They are chosen in the central University election. However, this lead at the moment to a double structure since a lot of PhD students are not matriculated so that they can only vote and candidate for the PhD convent but not for the faculty council.

In the current election there was no candidate of the Institute of Mathematics so that currently all four places (two for the convent and two for the faculty council) are covert by representatives of the Institute of Physics.

In the future, the double structure of the PhD representatives will hopefully solved by either a mandatory matriculation of all PhD students or by a new law which will integrate all PhD students in the same way independent of the matriculation.
